Debate And Poster Making Competition At SABVMCRI, Bengaluru On 7th November 2022

Gender in Medical Education project, a pioneering initiative by CEHAT engages with creating gender awareness and sensitivity within the MBBS curriculum through lectures conducted by trained medical educators. The project focused on empowering medical educators to impart knowledge to young minds. For the first time, CEHAT directly engaged with UG MBBS students by challenging these young minds to a debate competition on gender sensitivity and a poster competition on Health needs of LGBTQIA+ community held on the 7th November 2022.
The debate and poster competitions organized by the Literary club in collaboration with CEHAT and Forensic Medicine Department of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute, Bangalore offered a unique opportunity to budding MBBS students to contemplate and research on topics traditionally outside the realm of discussion in medical institutes yet of utmost importance in medical practice.
The debate competition had eight team and poster competition had six teams both across all years of MBBS. The knock out style debate competition was an exemplary example of the in-depth research carried out by students evident from their presentation of the case, rebuttal and closing statements on areas like violence against women, bodily autonomy, rights of LBGTQIA+ and ethics in clinical practice. The poster competition challenged students to engage with the health needs of LGBTQIA+ community a topic chosen in accordance with the Madras High Court judgement in February 2022 mandating the National Medical Council (NMC) to revise the MBBS curriculum and sensitively respond to the health needs of LGBTQIA+ community.
The first three winners of the debate and poster competitions respectively were awarded certificates. The event ended on a positive note awakening the critical thinking hats of students and teachers enthusiastically discussing on the relevance of these issues in the current context.
